Melbourne though they have not been recorded on the
Nullarbor Plain.
A very noisy, active and often ignore humans even at
close range.
Small mainly green with a dark purple crown and red
underwing coverts.
Their diet consists of nectar, pollen, seeds and
fruit.
Breeding usually occurs from August to
December.
Captivity :
A noisy bird that adds a comical feature to any
collection. Anything in the cage can be converted
into a toy. You can sometimes find a lorikeet on the
floor of its cage on its back playing with something.
A piece of silverbeet feeds as well as makes a great
toy. Ours are in suspended cages as less work is
required to keep their environment clean plus also it
is easier to keep the ants out of their food.
Out of all our birds these would be the most
inquisitive. Everything has to be investigated.
Everything that they do is done with enthusiasm such
as feeding time bath time it doesn’t matter
with their lungs in full use. We have one pair with a
young one in a communal situation where the young one
seems to keep guard and gives the alarm when you
approach. They all seem quite happy with this
arrangement.
