Mulga Parrot
Other Names:
Many Coloured Parrot
Scientific Name:
Psephotus varius
Length:
28cm
Distribution :
Mulga Parrots are widespread across the interior of Australia
from central NSW westward.
Cock: Bright green predominately with a yellow brow and
wing coverts.
Hen: Dull mainly olive green with red brow and wing
coverts.
They are usually found in pairs or small parties, but other than
this they are similar to red rumped parrots in many ways.
Breeding is strongly influenced by local rainfall and conditions.
When they do breed it is usually from August to December.
Captivity :
These birds generally breed well. We have had a hen lay up to
13 fertile eggs. They can hatch all of these and raise them all.
One of our Mulgas was hand raised and lived in our house for some
time before she was moved outside with a cock bird . She was a
great hand raised bird and a good mother. She was the exception
as other Mulgas are quiet, not aggressive and tend to keep to
themselves and ignore their neighbours. Much like the red rumps
they are great parents but young should be removed from parents
once they are independent. The cock bird can display aggressive
tendencies especially towards young cock birds. The young
aren’t as eratic as red rumps .
